I'm, for the most part, sure that im going to do my essay on immigration and the connection it has with low wadge workers in our society. Often times you hear that the immigrants in our country are the people that take the worst jobs. Basically the jobs us "Americans" dont want to do. I found some good sources and some bad sources, but for the most part the topic of immigration has so many aspects to it that talking just on one topic wont justify the whole conversation. I only plan to add to this conversation and i found some very interesting topics when reasearching.
The ironic this about my first source is that it's another blog site that people post thoughts and comments to. This particular blog is written by Dean Baker and is his "commentary on economic reporting. http://http://beatthepress.blogspot.com/2006/04/immigrants-and-low-wage-jobs.html. Haha thats a long link but there it is!! His blog talks about many of the issues and problems that are wong with our economy today. He states the fact that our problem now adays is not a shortage in low-wage workers, its the fact that employers do not want to keep raiseing wages along with the riseing products in our society. He also talks about how the considered "low wage jobs" that are present today (meat packers, construction workers, etc.) were not low wage jobs a mere 30 years ago. So its easy to see that because employers want to keep wages at the same level, more and more low wage jobs are continuing to pop up in our economy. This is happening by hireing not only immigrants but other people that will work the same job for less pay. Dean states that this is "simple part" of the problem to understand. What really intrigued was the issue that he broght up next. He argues that maybe instead of bringing in immigrats that are oviously less skilled, we should turn to those immigrants that are well skilled in their fields. The doctors and lawers that practice in other countries. This would have a crippling affect on our "blue collar" works, due to the surplus of skilled workers. This would then lower the prices that lawers and doctors charge to a price that could be very reasonable for the population. He then goes on to talk about how this plan would work in his eyes, and makes a comment about how the goverment has never even persued this plan. Others then comment on his work either agreeing with his theory or opposing it.
