Can there be only one word that best represents America? What word would you describe America as? Diversity is the first word that comes to my mind when I think of representing America. The picture I have chosen is a great example of diversity. It has six college students sitting in the grass studying/working together. The scenic background makes it seem like a calm and peaceful place. The sun is shining down on them to emphasize their togetherness and cooperation. The picture was taken at ground level, showing that we are on the same level as the people in the photo. I believe this picture represents America because years ago African Americans and Whites were segregated in almost everything. And now this picture depicts students of all different races working together. This just shows how much America has changed, meaning that the blending of races and cultural backgrounds are now much more common today, than they were before.
I feel that this picture is dominant and resistant at the same time. The photo is dominant in the sense that it is not unusual or considered wrong to see people of different races or cultural backgrounds together. People can choose who they want to be around and I think that this picture is great because it not only shows Blacks and Whites, but other races as well. Because if you look at America's culture and races there is not one single race, it is very diverse and considered a "melting pot". In my opinion I think that this picture is resistant too. This is because most people only look at the denotation of things and not at the connotation. Meaning that it can be denoted that people are sitting in the grass studying, but to say that these students make up our future is the connotation. I feel that this aspect is hidden in the picture.
I believe the affect of this photo demonstrates how it doesn't matter what size, shape, or color your skin is, we are all the same people. I feel that prejudice and discrimination has decreased but it needs to completely stop. There is no one race in the world and everyone needs to get used to it. An underlying message in this picture makes me think of the phrase "the children are our future." Because the people who are in college now (like the ones in the photo) are the ones getting an education so they can become part of the work force and are America's future for better or worse. We are the ones who will raise children eventually and teach them our morals and values to keep representing America.
